The Seychelles archipelago comprises of 115 islands scattered across 1,340,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean. The total land mass covers 455 square kilometres whilst the rest represents some of the best fishing ground in the world. The combination of atolls, granite and coral islands makes it a multi faceted and exciting fishing destination for amateurs and professionals alike. The diverse geology of its undersea world from its plateaus to drop-offs, sandy cays to shallow lagoons washed by the rich tropical currents guarantees excellent fishing throughout the year.
Seychelles attracts sport and recreational fishermen throughout the world. Big Game and Bottom Fishing are the most popular with Bone fishing fast catching on in popularity.
The fishing season is governed by the tradewinds. The South East being better for Big Game whilst the North West with its generally calmer seas is more favourable for bottom fishing. There are many ways to fish the Seychelles waters. If you are a keen fisherman we recommend the all inclusive overnight fishing expeditions. Departures are from any of the main islands: Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Silhouette, Bird, Denis and Desroches.
The waters surrounding Bird, Denis and Desroches in particular have proved to be very rewarding over the years due to their close proximity to the drop offs.
An abundance of pelagic fish including Sailfish, Marlin, Tunas, Jacks, Wahoo, Giant Barracuda and rainbow Runner are to be found offshore in and among shoals of bait fish.
The Silhouette and North Island area is notable for sailfish both in numbers caught and in size.
Big Game Fishing
The islands' waters boast an abundance of Big Game with serious fishermen emphasising on line class rather than all tackle. Dogtooth Tuna is the local pride with numerous world records caught by local and international anglers alike, including the all tackle record. Apart from standard artificial lures and jigs Seychelles is traditionally renowned for its strip bait. Live bait is an available alternative. All boats are equipped with Penn International, Fin Nor or Shimano rods and reels. Outriggers range from mono clips to six clips. Boats fish six to twelve lines depending on size. We encourage Tag and Release fishing whenever possible.
Bottom Fishing
Locally, bottom fishing is very popular. Whilst most locals fish with hand lines to guarantee the catch, there is a lot of fun to be had by the avid sports fisherman. Snappers, Groupers and Emperors are in abundance on the submerged granite reefs and off the numerous banks. Night fishing for barracuda is a must whilst bottom fishing in Seychelles!
Bone Fishing
Bone fishing is taking off in Seychelles. Bone fish is plentiful in the flats of Denis and off the beaches of Bird and North Island. The sandy bay of Anse La Mouche on Mahé is said to hold a respectable number of fish. Recent expeditions to the Amirantes and Cosmoledo Groups of islands are abound with stories of record size bonefish catches. Bone fish will eagerly accept most offerings that are cast in their vicinity and is a great light tackle sport.
Sport Fishing Fleet
The Marine Charter Association, through its members offers a variety of recreational boats for fishing charters.
Just in case you do not want to hire a boat to yourself, they often have names of other visitors who want to make up a decent fishing party.
Most boats operate from Mahé and will levy a displacement fee if the embarkation point is other than the Marine Charter in Victoria. Bird, Denis and Desroches however have their own fishing centres.
