Fonteverde Spa & Hotel. In a hilly landscape through ravines and clay rock formations, ochre colours blend into water colour shades of green, in the ancient spa of San Casciano Dei Bagni. Here, the Fonteverde Spa and Hotel, once a Medici residence built under Grand Duke Ferdinand I, has been splendidly renovated to become a classic contemporary luxurious hotel. It is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Val d'Orcia, the scenic setting punctuated by olive groves, vineyards and streams. An atmosphere reminiscent of the opulent Tuscan villas of the 17th Century is conveyed with elegant furniture and unique details everywhere. The guest rooms are richly decorated in classic antique furniture, elegant linens, paintings and original prints. Each has a terrace overlooking the breathtaking fields and lush hills of the Tuscan countryside, and original bathrooms are structured as miniature spas. La Posta Vecchia is a 17th century post station originally built to accommodate the visitors and tradesmen who in the old days journeyed to the neighboring Palo Castle which still rises magnificently over the Mediterranean. This old post house (La Posta Vechia) belonged to the Odescalchi family and was purchased in the early 1960’s by Jean Paul Getty, a good friend of Prince Ladislao Odescalchi. During Getty’s restoration of the Posta Vecchia the remains of two ancient Roman villas dating back to 2 B.C. were discovered beneath the foundations. The subterranean chambers and the objects found in them, are today in a small private underground museum which hotel guests are welcome to visit. La Posta Vecchia was converted into a luxury hotel in 1990. The sea view from some of the rooms as well as from the open terrace where meals are served is absolutely breathtaking
