Puglia is one of our favourite regions – and our most popular biking destination – for myriad reasons. We love the food: hearty, rustic Italian with an emphasis on fresh veggies. And the coastline is like nothing you’d expect in Italy; with whitewashed villages and a rocky shore, you’d swear you were in Greece. Then there’s the riding. It’s close to flat, and the quiet roads follow along the Adriatic and head inland through thousand-year-old olive groves and countryside dotted with stone trulli.

Puglia is the perfect place to bring kids. It’s laid back in that southern way that lets you dine casually, make fun shapes with mozzarella, and fashion your own pizza dinner. What’s more, warm beaches and cool caves keep kids entertained while adults linger at a seaside trattoria.

This lovely hotel was created around a 14thC seaside watchtower. Once used by Maltese Knights on guard against the Turks, the tower is now the hotel’s peaceful lookout from which to watch delighted guests lolling around the 15-hectare grounds, lounging by the huge saltwater swimming pool, strolling around their private olive groves and gardens, or heading off to the Aveda spa.
