Santa Maria Della Piazza, Ancona Museum

Originally a fortification on the city walls in the port area later to become a Paleo-Christian church. At the beginning of the 1200's this church recieved a new Byzantine style facade, built by a master craftsman Filippo. In some blind galleries, that characterise the facade one can recognise precious marble blocks with a peacock, an angel and as the centre piece of the entire facade the splendid 12th century Madonna in prayer one of the few "greco" type to arrive in Italy. Most of the decorative figures present are a repetition of those already seen in the Cathedral of San Ciriaco. A dedication to the Madonna and Master Filippo's name is carved on the lintel. The square directly in front of the church, was used for the investiture of those elected by the council and the court of elders as well as being the market place. By the beginning of the 1200's the function of the church in the public life of the city had increased: the raffigurations of the arts and the virtues of strength as in the courage of Hercules, carved on the facade reflect the two important foundations of the "res pubblica" of Ancona: the fine arts, characteristics of the city and the art of war. All of this is placed under the protection of the Madonna in prayer, link between man and God. Another point of interest is the underground remains of the Paleo-Christian church.
