Aosta is located in the northwestern corner of Italy in the center of the Aosta valley. The Valle d'Aosta is bounded by Switzerland to the north and France to the west. Aosta is about one hour from Turin (Torino), 30 minutes from Milan and Malpenso Airport, and 1.5 hours from Geneva, Switzerland.
Aosta's baliff's tower, constructed in the 12 or 13th century. In 1262 Guglielmo de Palatio sold it to the Count of Savoy, who decided it would become the residence of the "baliffs" or the administrators of the city.
Aosta is an interesting city that tourists have yet to discover. We drove around it for a while without finding the historic center, finding later that you really have to get out of the car to find it. Once inside, Aosta makes a fascinating stroll where you'll find a huge central piazza, lots of evidence of the Romans interwoven with the more modern (medieval) buildings, and plenty of cafes to sate your thirst or hunger. The attractive mountain town of AOSTA was founded by the Romans in 25 BC after they disposed of the local tribe by auctioning them off in a slave market. It was primarily a military camp, but little survives from the era. More remains of medieval Aosta, its narrow cobbled streets and overhanging upper storeys giving the place a very alpine air. The town's key attraction though is its position: encircled by the Alps, and with access to the lovely valleys of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, the ski resorts of Mont Blanc, and a sprinkling of castles in between, it's an ideal base for exploring the northwest of the region, before heading on to Switzerland or France.
Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, Great Saint Bernard, Gran Paradiso are the giants of skiing near Aosta, but there are many other ski resorts nearby.
