Bologna Parks and Gardens
 

Bologna, Italy can really boast about its wide variety of parks, ranging from the largest to the smallest, both private and public. You would never imagine that the city of Bologna would have so much greenery - if you know where to look! The Bologna, Italy parks and gardens include many that were the former private gardens and parklands of the city's nobility and whether it is just a small square with surrounding trees or a larger open space, they are all peaceful places to relax. Here are some of the most popular Bologna parks and gardens that provide a calming and tranquil oasis, right in the heart of Bologna city life.

The Margherita Gardens

The Margherita Gardens is Bologna's main park, providing the perfect place to relax and escape from the city. The gardens were created in 1875 and there is much to see and enjoy, including an oak woodland area, avenues lines with trees, pathways with many places to sit relax, a small lake and a chalet, which converts to a busy nightclub in the evenings. It has been a popular place for both visitors and locals for over 100 years and many families visit the park at the weekend.
Gardens open: daily - 06:00 to midnight

Parco Montagnola

This large park is situated in the centre of Bologna and over the years many popular public events have taken place here. The gardens have been used as a public park since the 17th century and were further landscaped in the early 19th century, when much of the existing structure was created. The gardens have continued to be developed an in 1888 a large pond was introduced in the centre of the park.
Gardens open: daily - 07:00 to midnight

Orto Botanico (Botanical Gardens)

The beautiful Botanical Gardens in Bologna are full of history and were originally created in the mid 16th century, when herbs for medicines were grown here. Over the years it has been enlarged and improved and today is home to over 5,000 plant species. The gardens are the second largest park in the city with many established plants, such as a fully grown sequoia, a greenhouse for cacti and insectivorous plants, tropical specimens, Mediterranean shrubs and medicinal plants.
Gardens open: Monday to Friday - 08:30 to 15:00, Saturday 08:00 to 13:00

Villa delle Rose

This splendid park was originally the grounds of the 18th-century Villa delle Rose, which is still located in the park, and is situated on the slopes of Monte Franco. Home to many native, exotic and some rare plants, the relaxing Italian gardens are were originally constructed for the 'Cella' family. In 1916 the beautiful gardens were donated to the city and continue to be developed by a team of committed gardeners. The Villa frequently hosts many art exhibitions throughout the year.
Gardens open: Tuesday to Sunday - 15:00 to 19:00

Villa Guastavillani

Built in the 16th century, the Villa Guastavillani was designed by Tomasso Martelli, a leading architect of the time. The Italian gardens of the villa are stunning and blend well with the elegant exterior of the grand Villa.
Gardens open: Monday to Saturday - 08:00 to 14:00

Villa Spada

Created on the grounds of the 18th-century Villa, this park offers a wonderful view of Bologna's surrounding hills and is bordered by the Ravone river. The Palazzo Ravone was constructed in the 18th century and the gardens were initially constructed then. Opened to the public in 1970, the gardens of the Villa Spade feature a large terraced Italian garden and many native and unusual plants from all over the world.
Gardens open: April to September - Tuesday to Sunday 07:30 to 22:00 October to March - Tuesday to Sunday 07:30 to 18:00
