Di Capua Castle at Gambatesa
|
This lovely castle on the Serrone, which reach toward the Tappino valley was originally an austere, feudal, fortified castle. It was then, during the 16th century, gentrified and transformed into a Renaissance residence for the Di Capua family. This fact of being a residence has kept the castle from falling into disrepair, as so many in the region have, and it is in good overall condition, corroborated with valid internal restoration. Today the castle seems like a sumptuous picture gallery thanks to the numerous Manneristic frescoes painted in the 16th century by Donato di Copertino and his students. |

National Museum of the Paleolithic Era of Isernia The grandfather of Europe in 'La Pineta' |
| |
In 1979, at 'La Pineta' in Isernia, the oldest Paleolithic remains in Europe were discovered. These remains are of inestimable importance for paleontologists and date back to 730,000 years ago. In order to make this unique patrimony available to the public, to protect it and to permit the excavations, which also have educational value, to continue, a new futuristic type of museum has been planned on top of the remains and where it will be possible to observe and participate in the work. In the meantime, the extraordinary findings have been recomposed and are on exhibit, for the most part, in the Musuem of Santa Maria delle Monache. |
