Trieste Art and Museums, Italy Luxury Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages

Civico Museo della Risiera di San Sabba

Via Ratto della Pileria, 43, Trieste, Italy

Trieste Art and Museums, Italy Luxury Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages This building became the site of the only extermination camp in Italy with the German occupation in 1943. It has been a national monument since 1965. 3,000 to 5,000 people lost their lives here. At the end of the war the building was partially destroyed by fleeing Nazis, trying to eliminate proof of the horrors they committed. Restored in 1975, this is a frightening place to visit; the death cells are open to visit as well as 17 detention cells, and a historic, photographic exhibition. Do not miss out on a visit.

Museo Sveviano

Piazza Hortis, 4, Trieste, Italy

Trieste Art and Museums, Italy Luxury Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages Located in the same library where he loved to spend hours with the great, European classics, this small, central museum is perhaps the only one in Europe that is devoted to Ettore Schmitz. Better known by his penname, Italo Svevo, he was a famous writer who was born in Trieste on the 19 December 1861. Here his personal books are kept here alongside his most important editions, translations and critical texts about him.

A violin lover and an author of books such as Senility (1898) and the Conscience of Zen (1923), which is also his most complex and fascinating work, he studied in Bavaria at the college of Segnitz before working in the Trieste branch of the Union Bank of Vienna. He married Liva Veneziani, daughter of a famous man who produced rust resistant paint for boats. He entered into the family business and travelled extensively for this, mostly to France and England. As a result he gained a good knowledge of languages and met James Joyce, who was teaching at the Berlitz school of Trieste.

Svevo is considered to be the major Trieste writer and one of the masters of contemporary Italian literature. He died in September 1928 in a car accident near Motta di Livenza.

Civico Museo di Storia e Arte e Orto Lapidario

Via della Cattedrale, 15, Trieste, Italy

Trieste Art and Museums, Italy Luxury Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages Near the San Giusto castle and cathedral, this complex is divided in two; one part is the Museum of History and Art, and the other is the Orto Lapidario. It was built by the historical, Trieste patriot Domenico Rossetti and opened in 1843, and it is a beautiful garden where the base of the equestrian monument to Fabio Severo of the second century can be found. This has fragments of an inscription that bears witness to the construction of city walls by Ottaviano Augusto in AD 32, and some funeral monuments. The cenotaph of Johann Joachin Winckelmann is also here, the famous German archeologist who was killed in Trieste in 1768. Near the cathedral there is an underground passage that leads to the remains of the roman monument, while the other garden is surrounded by the fifteenth century city walls.

The museum is in an enchanting, neo classical building, dating from 1925. There are sculptures in the atrium, found in digs near the Roman Theatre, by Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, including a portrait of Petronio Modesto. The first room is dedicated to Egypt, and has a mummy, and the second room has the finds of an Italian mission to the Swart valley, in Pakistan. Part of the first floor is dedicated to prehistoric times, and another part to the roman era with objects found in nearby Aquileia. The last room is reserved for a collection of Greek vases, including one dating from 400 AD.

Museo Ferroviario

Via Giulio Cesare, 1, Trieste, Italy

Trieste Art and Museums, Italy Luxury Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages In the old Campo Marzio station, opened in 1906 by the Archduke Francesco Ferdinando, this museum tells the story of the evolution of railway transport through the use of documents, photos, models, videos, locomotives, carriages and more than 1,500 books dedicated to the subject.

The exhibition is divided into four sections; history, labour, electrical systems and movement. There is also a fifth section that is devoted to the tramways of Trieste, Istria and Friuli. There is also a chance to take an old train to platforms that are no longer in use, leading to the outskirts of Trieste or to Bled, a lovely town near the Slovenian border. The timetable constantly changes so contact the museum for details.
