 8 Days / 7 Nights

Explore the storied history and cultural treasures of Pompeii, the Vatican, and the Roman Empire – including exclusive, private after-hours visits to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel! Balance architectural landmarks with the natural beauty of the Isle of Capri’s rugged coastline, and the seaside villages and cliffs found along the Amalfi Coast. Visits include the Colosseum, ancient treasures in an archaeological museum in Naples, and a tour of Pompeii, preserved under volcanic ash for nearly 2,000 years. Travel by jet boat and high-speed train, enjoy an exclusive lecture on contemporary Italian society, and catch the views from glorious private villas on this Rome, Amalfi Coast, and Capri journey.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Buon Giorno Italia – Welcome to Rome!
Tour begins: 6:00 PM at Hotel Majestic, Rome. A transfer is included from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino to the landmark Hotel Majestic. Enjoy the company of your fellow travelers at our welcome cocktail reception and dinner tonight.
Meals: Dinner
Lodging: Hotel Majestic, Rome, Italy

Day 2: Ruins of Pompeii & the pleasures of Positano
Depart Rome to visit the excavated ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii, which was buried under ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Tour highlights include Teatro Grande, capable of seating 5,000 people, and Villa dei Misteri, featuring one of the ancient world’s largest paintings. Continue your journey through the Campania countryside to the gorgeous Amalfi Coast for a two-night stay at Le Agavi Hotel a Positano, nestled on steep cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean -- suspended in luxury between the sky and the sea.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Le Agavi Hotel a Positano, Italy

Day 3: Amalfi Coast drive and an excursion to Ravello
Drive along the Amalfi Coast, one of Europe’s most dramatic shorelines. See the brightly colored houses set on towering cliffs above the sea, and the houses in the town of Amalfi built between the 10th and 13th centuries; visit the Cathedral of St. Andrew. Then it's on to Ravello to visit Villa Rufolo, the former residence of several popes, offering perhaps the best view on the coast. Lunch today is at a local restaurant where you'll get a real taste of Italy – and perhaps have your cheeks pinched by the owner! Return to Positano, and enjoy free time in the afternoon to find your own special views.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch
Lodging: Le Agavi Hotel a Positano, Italy

Day 4: Ride a jet boat from Sorrento to the Isle of Capri
Leave the Amalfi Coast and discover the pleasures of lovely Sorrento. There, board a jet boat that will whisk you to the Isle of Capri, affording wonderful views of its jagged coastline, studded with grottoes. Upon arrival, you'll be picked up by convertible taxi -- your transportation for the next two days -- and taken to the Grand Hotel Quisisana; it is one of the most celebrated hotels in Europe, set on the exclusive "Via Camerelle" in the heart of Capri, a few steps from the Piazzetta.
Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Lodging: Grand Hotel Quisisana, Capri, Italy

Day 5: Isle of Capri in a convertible car
You will really feel like a jetsetter today when you explore the history and natural attractions of the Isle of Capri in a convertible car. Visit the town of Anacapri, then beautiful Villa San Michele, built in the late 19th century atop Roman palace ruins. Get a noted professor's perspectives on contemporary Italian society during a lecture at a private villa overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Then spend the rest of the day as you please on Capri -- enjoying the pleasures of a less-crowded island after the day-trippers have departed.
Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Lodging: Grand Hotel Quisisana, Capri, Italy

Day 6: Archaeological Museum and much more in Naples
Head back to the Amalfi Coast and the influential city of Naples. A sightseeing tour shows you landmark sights such as Posillipo, the district of Santa Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito, Castel Nuovo, and Teatro San Carlo, Italy’s oldest opera house. A guided visit to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale showcases the treasured artifacts of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This afternoon, say goodbye to the beautiful Amalfi Coast and travel first class on the high-speed TAV train to return to Rome. After arriving in Rome, please join us for a farewell dinner -- saving your last night in the "eternal city" for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Vatican.*
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Lodging: Hotel Majestic, Rome, Italy

Day 7: Rome and a private, after-hours visit to the Vatican Museums
Begin your day with a guided excursion through Imperial Rome, including a visit to the legendary Colosseum, opened in AD 80 for gladiator battles. Spend the afternoon exploring on your own before enjoying this evening's Exclusive – discovering the rich treasures of Vatican City on a private, after-hours visit to the Vatican Museums!* You'll be amazed at how much you see without the crowds! Take a guided tour of the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, and the Tapestries. In the Sistine Chapel, gaze in amazement at Michelangelo’s frescoes of The Last Judgment on the altar and Genesis on the ceiling – and then look down at the floor, usually obstructed by a volume of people during regular opening hours.
Meals: Breakfast
Lodging: Hotel Majestic, Rome, Italy

Day 8: Ciao, Rome, the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri
Rome, Capri and Amalfi Coast tour ends in Rome. Fly home anytime. A transfer is included from the Hotel Majestic, Rome to Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino. Please allow 2 1/2 hours for flight check-in.
Meals: Breakfast
*Note: Select departures will experience the private Vatican Museums visit on day 6 and the farewell dinner on day 7; ask at booking for details.
