Day 5 Meeting of the Waters—São Paulo Today at sunrise, you arrive at the “Meeting of the Waters.” This is one of Brazil’s most incredible natural displays. Nothing can fully prepare you for this incredible place where two distinct bodies of water meet, but don't mix. This is because the Rio Negro is a slower, much heavier body of water than the Rio Solimoes. Temperature, density, velocity differences keep these two bodies of water separate for more than 6 miles before at last they join to form the great Amazon. Disembark in Manaus and fly to Sao Paulo. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Grand Hyatt Hotel
Day 6 The Pantanal This morning you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight to Campo Grande. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred into the Pantanal to your lodge. Days 7-9 Arrive Pantanal Two daily activities are scheduled, one in the morning and another one in the afternoon. At night, you can watch an audiovisual presentation about the Pantanal or view the animals at night. In winter, these night excursions are done after the afternoon outing; in the summer, they are after dinner. Evening excursions allow you the opportunity to observe nocturnal animals, such as alligators, capybaras, anteaters, small wolves, etc. This tour is done in open vehicles with the help of flashlights.
You can also choose from a variety of other excursions: A tour in an open vehicle is the best way to reach places far from the farm. Crossing fields and stretches of jungle, this tour broadens opportunities to observe and photograph the wild life.
One of the best ways to explore the Pantanal is on horseback, allowing for visits to areas which are inaccessible by other means, such as local flooded areas, where the water is too deep for motorized vehicles or too shallow for other boats. The horses are trained for inexperienced riders, making it easy for everyone to observe different environments in the Pantanal, from flooded fields to open vegetation and even forests with large trees.
Hiking makes it easy to observe forest vegetation and the animals such as “quatis” (raccoon-like mammals) and monkeys. The trails begin in bush with vegetation that is typical of the Pantanal, as long grass and coppice, and in transition areas, as in the open pastures. This allows visitors to get to know an even larger variety of animals and plants in the region.
Canoe tours on the lakes within the ranch are also offered. Mammals such as capybaras, and monkeys can be seen, as well as birds that commonly inhabit the area (cormorants, anhingas, skimmers, herons and egrets). Refúgio Ecológio Caiman
Day 10 Depart Brazil After your morning tour, you’ll be transferred for the 4-hour return trip to Campo Grande. Upon arrival, you’ll fly to Sao Paulo for your departure flight home.
