Itinerary
PROVENCE, THE CAMARGUE, LANGUEDOC Departing Avignon from May and October. Avignon, home to the spectacular 14th-century Palace of the Popes, is the starting point for this glorious exploration of the culture, history and "good life" for which Provence is famous. Weaving your way into the Luberon Valley and the Gard, there are wonderful treasures waiting to be found in the shops of St. Quentin de la Potterie, Uzés and St-Rémy. Or simply relax in the tranquil landscapes, sweeping les Beaux-de-Provence and the Roman aqueduct known as the Pont du Gard. After cruising south and west on the River Rhône, past the 15th-century castles of Tarascon and Beaucaire, 'Roi Soleil' calls at Arles with its Roman ruins and Van Gogh landscapes. Then, she enters the Camargue, a region populated by flamingos, wild white horses and black bulls. Not to be missed are Aigues-Mortes, a walled medieval town, and Sète, where traditional fishermen spread their nets. Continue to Agde, hailed by Marco Polo as "the black pearl of the Mediterranean."
CANAL DU MIDI BÉZIERS TO CARCASSONNE Departing Béziers from March - April and June - September. This cruise is a journey on the magnificent, 17th-century Canal du Midi, now World Heritage listed, with its spectacular flights of locks and arched stone bridges. On this treelined route between Béziers and Carcassonne, 'Roi Soleil' glides through a remarkably diverse landscape - from the rugged, rural Languedoc to the sun-drenched blue of the Mediterranean. Visit the Roman colony of Narbonne, the fortified medieval villages of the Minervois and the grand Abbey of Fontfroide. Enjoy private wine tasting in renowned regional domains. A cruise highlight is the visit to Carcassonne, one of Europe's most evocative medieval cities. All along the way, step off the barge to cycle or walk along tree-lined towpaths and into romantic canal-side villages.
