What to expect:
Secluded on 135 acres at the end of a meandering desert road, Hotel Twin Dolphin is not for the see-and-be-seen crowd. Not much at the hotel has changed since its creation in 1978, and that's exactly how the regulars want it. Couples and loyal guests return yearly, bringing their growing families and friends. Jet setters arrive and pack away their mobile phones. Others just want a simple home base for golfing and fishing adventures.

Amenity highlights:
The hotel's nine-hole putting green helps guests tune up for play at nearby courses. Two lighted tennis courts are set back from the beach, where the wind is calmer. A nearly two-mile hiking trail winds through the adjacent nature preserve, giving explorers a sense of desert isolation, while never more than 15 minutes away from the swim-up bar and massage rooms. The sandy beach is good for shell collecting and a step-in point for snorkeling.

Insider tip:
The popular sunning and snorkeling beach of Santa Maria is just a 15 minute hike north of the Hotel Twin Dolphin. The hotel lends guests beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and snorkeling equipment. Tour boats arrive near mid-day, but in the morning hours, it's usually deserted.

The hotel's key amenity is its view, which spans from the deep waters of the Sea of Cortez all the way to Land's End. The beach is good for snorkeling and collecting shells. Guests sunbathe on cushioned mats rather than lounge chairs. Recreation is plentiful by means of a pool, hot tub, a small exercise room, putting green, hiking trail, and two tennis courts. Hotel Twin Dolphin also has two massage rooms.

The Restaurant -
With seating in the high-ceilinged indoor dining room or outdoors on a shaded veranda next to the pool and facing the ocean, the main restaurant features freshly prepared Californian and Mexican specialties, including Angus beef, New Zealand lamb and fresh fish. The chef uses herbs, produce and fruit grown in the hotel's own organic garden while dairy products come from a family of resident Nubian goats.

Baro Asis -
The hotel's thatch-roofed, swim-up and poolside bar features tropical drinks and friendly bartenders, who often remember return guests' favorite cocktails.

Gallo Tuertos -
The casual indoor bar with fireplace, big-screen TV, games and book exchange is popular in winter months, when guests gather for drinks and conversation.
