Campeche, the walled city was the first of its kind in North America. It was built by the Spanish to protect the settlement and port from pirates, Campeche provides a fascinating insight into life in a Caribbean tropical seaport during colonial times. One of Mexico's most beautiful cities, it is filled with colonial houses painted in bright pastels. At Puerto Tierra (Land Gate), a sound and fun light show re-creates battles between the Spanish settlers and English pirates. In one Campeche fortification, the Museum of Mayan Architecture displays important pieces of archaeological sites. The San Miguel Fort, has one of the best Museums of Mayan Culture, with extraordinary examples of jade and stone sculptures.
Among the Campeches many archaeological sites is Calakmul, burried deep in the jungle - is the biggest Mayan city ever discovered, with huge pyramids that peer across the treetops. Closer to the Campeche, the Mayan ruin of Edzná, which translates as "the house of Itzaes," has an interesting architectural style with fortresslike pyramids.
Campeche also offers little-known beaches of white sand and quaint fishing villages along the Gulf of Mexico, such as Seyba Playa and Champotón. In recent times the Historic Center of the State of Campeche was remodel, it recovered its splendor from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some attractions are its houses of high roofs and wide central patios and big Colonial buildings, such as the San Francisco ex convent, which is the oldest building, the San Jose temple, current Regional Museum of Campeche, the Concepcion Cathedral and the Culture House.
This city has friendly people, colorful handicrafts and dishes of excellent quality.
You can also go sightseeing by ancient cable cars replicas, one called "El Guapo" (the cute) that goes along the forts of San Miguel and San Jose, and the other is the cable car of the City, that make a tour of the Historical Center of Campeche.
