Attractions
About 77 miles (123 km) to the south of Zacatecas, Aguscalientes is named for the thermal springs found in the area. The city is also known for a network of tunnels beneath it, clearly manmade—the origin of the city’s nickname “the perforated city”—, but no one knows by whom. Modern Aguascalientes is an important manufacturing center, and several foreign companies have set up operations here.
The city is especially renowned for its spectacular sunsets and the Feria Nacional de San Marcos, Mexico’s oldest state fair, which has been celebrated here since 1604.
Most of the city’s sights can easily be seen on foot.
Special Events
One of the most famous festivals in all Mexico is Aguascalientes’ San Marcos Fair, held annually from about April 20 to May 10 since the early 17th century. Bullfights, cockfights, fireworks, rodeos, crafts exhibits, and concerts make the city come alive. Most of the activities take place in Jardín de San Marcos, one of the city’s many pleasant parks.
Shopping
Downtown, Juárez and Unión streets are lined with clothing shops. Plaza de Vestir, located in the Industrial Zone south of the city, is a vast shopping center filled with textiles, clothing, and Aguascalientes’ famous deshilados (lost thread work) and embroideries. The Terán Market, in addition to meats, poultry, produce and flowers, carries a wide variety of local crafts and the Juárez Market, which is also known as the “huaraches market” displays a huge selection of shoes, sandals and leather goods.
