Quinta Real Zacatecas, Zacatecas Luxury Hotel
One of the world’s most unusual hotels, Quinta Real Zacatecas is built into the grandstand of the restored San Pedro bullfighting ring, which was built in the 19th century and witnessed its last corrida in 1975. So ingeniously does this unique hotel preserve the character and beauty of the original structure that the restoration project received the International Architectural Award just after it was inaugurated in 1989.

The hotel’s 49 spacious suites are decorated in classic colonial style, with armoires, antiques and original works of art. Grand Class Suites - Spacious and luxurious, the ten Quinta Real Grand Class suites overlook the Suites Patio and feature bathrooms with jacuzzi tub and shower. Some of the suites have a small sofa. Presidential Suite - The expansive Presidential Suite features a private terrace overlooking El Ruedo, the former bullring that has been transformed into a beautiful patio epitomizing colonial charm. On two levels, it consists of the Principal Suite on the lower floor, with living room, small dining room, and a Jacuzzi tub and separate shower in the bathroom. On the second story are two Master Suites, each with two double beds, bathtub and shower, desk and view of El Ruedo.

The restaurant La Plaza forms part of the sun stands and has three levels, simulating the layout of the stands, and from any table there is a splendid view of the ring, the aqueduct and, in the background, the Cathedral of Fátima.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in La Plaza, and the culinary choices are as unique as the hotel itself. La Plaza Restaurant is imbued with a refined and elegant atmosphere, featuring high beamed ceilings, a spectacular chandelier and original works of arts. The restaurant is tiered, with large picture windows, affording all tables a view of the flower-filled patio. Service is attentive and the menu features beef, chicken and seafood dishes as well as local specialties. Additionally, regional dishes are offered from the menus of other Quinta Real hotels across Mexico.
Botarel bar
Located in the area where the animals were kept penned up before they were released into the ring, it has brick walls and ceilings, arched walkways, flickering candles and a very intimate feeling. The bar is popular with hotel guests and locals and features live music on the weekends. An extensive wine menu offers selections from Mexico and around the world.

Zacatecas, the capital of the state of the same name, is called “the city with the pink stone face and silver heart.” One of Mexico’s highest cities (8,000 feet), it is squeezed into a narrow gully between two bare hills.Elegant, almost regal, and a true colonial gem, Zacatecas is one of Mexico’s most photogenic cities and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. Beautifully preserved pink stone buildings adorned with delicate wrought iron balconies line a labyrinth of spotless narrow streets that twist and turn through the city.It’s a long (seven hour) but easy drive from Mexico City, and service is available aboard deluxe buses. Jerez. A beautifully preserved colonial city founded in 1536, Jerez makes for an interesting side trip. Its horseshoe-shaped Hinojosa Theater, which was built seven years after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, is a replica of Washington, D.C.’s Ford’s Theater.
Shopping
Zacatecas is known for its silver jewelry, many pieces reflecting the designs of the wrought iron that adorns the windows of the colonial buildings, and for its black, red and white serapes. Leatherwork is another regional specialty. Most of these products are available in the shops in the Gonzalez Ortega market.
Nightlife
Zacatecas’ nightlife is livelier than one would expect. One of the highlights is the disco in El Eden mine (open Thursday to Saturday). On special occasions there are nighttime.
