In Nahuatl, Ixtapa means "place of white sands". The place has become a very carefully planned tourist center since its inception in 1972. It has a wide beach, called Del Palmar, along which is a 3 kilometer strech of hotels facing the open waters of the pacific. There's also a shopping centers, golf courses, and a modern marine with 600 docks.
Zihuatanejo is an old fishing community located along a protected 2.6 km-wide picturesque bay. Before the arrival of the Spanish, a Tarasco king inhabited the "Las Gatas", beach where he ordered the construction of a breakwater so that his maidens could swim in peace. Years later it became a refuge for pirates.
Its original náhuatl name, Cihuatlan, means "Place of Women". But when the Spaniard's arrived, they considered it a place of little importance and so, in open defiance, and clearly intending to reducule it, they added the derogatory suffix "nejo" to "Cihuatlan", hence its present name of "Zihuatanejo".
You can visit all of Zihuatanejo on foot. The town's museum, restaurants, shops and stone-paved streets are all next to the beach. The climate is quite warm.
Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are only 7 kilometers away from each other, a distance that can be covered in 5 minutes by car. The two are ideal resorts for resting, having fun and practicing aquatic sports.
There is a new complex, the Marina Ixtapa, which includes shops, islets, villas, and docks for yachts and restaurants specialized in an assortment of dishes. At night the ambience of Ixtapa is full razzmatazz where all tourists may spend memorable evenings at discos and pubs.
Likewise, going shopping means fun; we recommend the shopping centers that are found in the hotel zone in Ixtapa and the typical arts and crafts markets in Zihuatanejo.
One place you definitely have to visit is Isla Ixtapa, a wild fauna refuge where there are raccoons, armadillos, deer, iguanas and various species of birds.

In the sixteenth century Spanish galleons departed from Zihuatanejo to the Philippines, establishing a trade routs between Zihuatanejo and the Orient. the port later became a refuge for pirates.
Zihuatanejo it's a dream of calm tropical beauty. Their beaches without multitudes and spectacular sun set have attracted visitors since decades and still they offer rustic lodgings on the beach that emphasize the natural scenes.
