Tour Itinerary
Days 1-2
Arrive in Mexico City and continue to Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital city of Chiapas. You are met by your guide to drive toward Chiapa de Corzo and the Sumidero Canyon. Upon arrival at the embarcadero (the boat dock), you board a speedboat for an adventure down the Sumidero Canyon with the majestic rock walls towering thousands of feet above. After your river trip, travel into the highlands and finally to your charming colonial hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas.
Day 3
Visit the surrounding villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. The Mayan highland traditions live on strongly in these isolated mountain villages. The last remaining back-strap weavers reside in these communities, and you have the opportunity to see their crafts and even try a hand at weaving in the centuries old Mayan tradition.
Day 4
Navigate the Southern Sierra Madre descending from alpine forests into the steamy lowland jungles of Palenque. Your first stop is the Mayan archaeological site of Tonina with more than 100 monuments, most dating from the Maya Classic Period from the sixth through the ninth centuries. One of the most amazing attractions in Tonina is a stucco slab with bas reliefs of Mayan ceremonial blood letting. Continue your descent along the steep mountain roads and visit the beautiful Misol Ha waterfall.
Day 5
Some of the least visited and most impressive sites in the Mayan world are explored today. These include the Lacandon forest; Bonampak, famous for its astonishing frescoes inside the Templo de las Pinturas; and Yaxchilan, renowned for its incredible landscape and considered one of the most important sites in the ancient Mayan world.
Day 6
Take a privately guided tour of the stunning archaeological site of Palenque, an important power center during the height of Mayan civilization that dates back to 100 BC. Then head to the Gulf of Mexico and the bustling economic center of Villa Hermosa.
Day 7
You are driven to the Villa Hermosa airport for your flight home.
