On this independent journey, explore two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Puebla and Oaxaca. Visit some of Puebla's churches and buildings and admire their distinctive azulejos (ceramic tiles). Then investigate the remarkable Spanish architecture in Oaxaca's historic center. Stroll through local markets to buy artisan crafts (such as San Bartolo's shiny black pottery) and watch artisans in Teotitlan del Valle weave their famous Zapotec rugs.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1
Explore Cholula, famous for its churches and its Great Pyramid temple - the largest in the world by volume. Continue to Puebla for lunch and then to your hotel.
Day 2
Enjoy a privately guided tour of Puebla's historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to more than 70 churches and thousands of colonial buildings, many covered with azulejos (ceramic tiles) for which the city has become famous.
Day 3
Travel to Oaxaca with your guide and explore the historic city center, yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been recognized for its magnificent Spanish colonial architecture.
Day 4
Visit the outlying valley market villages of Ocotlan, Santo Tomas Jalieza and San Bartolo de Coyotepec. The shiny black pottery of San Bartolo de Coyotepec and the colonial charm of Santo Tomas are world renowned. Meet the artisans who have developed sophisticated traditions in their respective crafts and learn how each is made. Lunch is with a local family today.
Day 5
Join your guide and visit the ancient ruins of Monte Alban. Spend a few hours walking and discovering this significant Zapotec site. Afterward, return to Oaxaca and explore the galleries, museums and crafts shops.
Day 6
Begin the day with an early visit to the bustling local market at Tlacochahuaya where villagers from the surrounding five valleys come to trade their wares. Continue on to Teotitlan del Valle, home to the famous Zapotec rug weavers, for a demonstration of traditional weaving and dying techniques. Afterward, visit the important Mixtec/Zapotec archaeological site of Mitla before returning to Oaxaca, but not before a quick stop at a Mezcal distillery to learn about and sample some of the local spirits.
Day 7
Transfer to the Oaxaca airport for your onward flight home.
