Land of striking mountain ranges, which run trough its entire sinuous territory. The high hilltops touch the clouds, sometimes cuddling the sky. Its valleys lay peacefully below the mountains. Its rivers go in narrow and twisty creeks, spreading vitality throughout the region.

Oaxaca's insides have revealed slowly the magnificent pre-Hispanic heritage of its archaeological areas, such as Monte Alban, Mitla, Zaachila, Yagul, Lambityeco. Ethnic wealth and cultural diversity coexist in all 14 different languages spoken in the State. The State of Oaxaca also hosts colonial cities, plenty of convents, churches, buildings and homes, each one just as beautiful as its pre-Hispanic art. Regional dishes are a whole new chapter in the history of Oaxaca. "Moles" (spicy chili sauces) in seven different colors, salted beef, cheese, tamales, grilled crickets, chocolate, "tlayudas" (giant toasted corn tortillas), "tasajo" (dried beef), ice cream and other delights, an authentic adventure. Each city, each street market, each place in Oaxaca is an endless world of smells, flavors and colors. Everything here is opulent, huge, colorful, voluptuous, memorable and different. |
The City of Oaxaca spreads over an ample valley surrounded by high Sierras. This peaceful valley is almost always cuddled by a cloud-studded sky. Thus, it used to be called "Land of Clouds". Ancient documents proof that this city was founded in 1526 under the name of "Villa de Antequera de Guaxaca". However, it seems to have been created by a diligent God.
This city, as well as its surrounding area, is a true Pandora box, a real pleasure for all senses. As soon as you arrive there, you will be surprised by the peculiar joy found in each and every person, as well as their pride in their historic past, as shown by the numerous Colonial and nineteen-century buildings, built by knowledgeable artisans, just a sample of the centennial commitment of the people of Oaxaca to their handiwork. Examples of this artistry are the Temple and Ex Convent of Santo Domingo and those of the Seven Princes, the Government Palace and the Macedonio Alcalá Theatre, just to mention a few.
In the city, indigenous traditions are pretty much alive, anywhere from its handicrafts and well-rooted traditions, all the way to the actual presence of individuals that represent each of the different ethnic groups that live within the State. Even more, archaeological areas that are proof of the past of those who have lived in the Valley of Oaxaca surround the City.
However, the best areas where the myriad of colors and leisure that characterize the people from Oaxaca is displayed to its fullest extent, are the Market, the fiestas and celebrations as well as the wealth of cultural traditions found every day in this City.Charming" could very well be Oaxaca's middle name. Just walking through any street or attending any of its multiple celebrations would be enough to realize that we are not exaggerating. Or else, take a look at any painting by Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo or Roberto Morales.
However, the City is very much History alive. The abundance of its buildings is enough to corroborate the fact. As far as religious constructions, the City hosts 29 Colonial Churches: Santo Domingo Temple and Ex Convent; El Carmen Temple and Ex Convent; the Cathedral, San Agustín Temple and Ex Convent; Compañía de Jesús Temple, San Cosme and Damián Temple, Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Basílica and Ex Convent, among others.
In this city, there is also a myriad of beautiful civil edifications: the Macedonio Alcalá Theatre, Xochimilco Arches, State Public Library, Government Palace, Dance Plaza, as well as hundreds of homes built during the nineteenth century.
History is well guarded by several museums within the City: Oaxaca Graphic Arts Institute, Contemporary Art Museum, Rufino Tamayo Museum and Oaxaca Regional Museum, among others.
In Oaxaca, life is magical, where dozens of colors, the mysteries of indigenous traditions, the abundance of celebrations and the lush vegetation of its surrounding areas are the masters of it all.
