Palenque: Apart from the ruins, near the City you will find water sports available, such as swimming and kayaking. You can also go hiking, where you will discover a myriad of species of flora and fauna.
Within the City, the main attraction is the museum, a place where you will be able to see the great historic legacy from this archaeological area.
It is also nice getting to know the city natives, thus sharing their customs and traditions, preserved throughout time.
This archaeological area was one of the most important cities of the Classic period (200-900 AC), it had great power over the entire area and it was named so because it is located close to the town of Santo Domingo de Palenque.
This area, partially covered by jungle, includes Mayan architecture of exceptional quality, as proven by its structures, such as the "Templo de las Inscripciones" and "The Palace", in sharp contrast with the jade green color of the jungle. Another distinctive trace is the quality of its sculptures.
In order to get there, you can take the Santo Domingo de Palenque road to Palenque, which is located 8 kilometers (5 miles) from there, and you will get there in 10 minutes. If you leave from San Cristobal de las Casas, take route #199 and it will take you between 4 and 5 hours to get there. It is better to drive in the daytime.
You can also fly in from Tuxtla Gutierrez.
PALENQUE MUSEUM Here, you will find several pre-Hispanic Mayan art objects, such as pottery, jade and masks, found during the latest excavations of the Palenque archaeological site. |
