Art & Handcrafts In the city of Palenque , craftwork can be purchased either in the shops or directly from the indigenous people who set up their stalls in the streets and markets. These handicrafts, produced in various regions in the state, include textiles that are made up into a remarkable variety of dresses, tablecloths, mats and decorative objects. Zoque craftsmen are famous for their gold and amber ear-rings whereas the highlands are renowned for their leatherwork, wrought iron and cotton and woolen textiles, Amatenango del Valle for its pottery, Chiapa de Corzo for its wood carvings and masks, Simojovel for its amber jewelry, Berriozabal for its marimbas and hammocks, and Palenque for its reproductions of pre-Hispanic objects.
Museums The archaeological zone provides a display of Mayan culture.
The Alberto Ruz Lhuillier Museum This museum will contribute greatly to your understanding of the Mayan culture prior to a visit to the pyramids at the archeological site. It displays different objects found throughout the excavations, such as tablets carved out of stone, stuccoes, glyphs and clay cylinders used as bases for incense burners.
