<<< Back To Palenque Overview

Several spectacular buildings are contained within an area of 16 sq. km, including the Temple of Inscriptions, the Great Palace, Temple XI, the Temples of the Foliated Cross, the Sun and the Count as well as the ballgame. Visitors can take photographs, carry out research or purchase craftwork.

Bonampak

Outstanding features include the Great Square, with Stela 1 and the Acropolis that houses the building with the mural paintings that have made it famous. It is located 176 km outside Palenque and can be reached by light aircraft from Palenque, Villahermosa or Ocosingo.

Temple of the Count
This building once housed Count Waldeck, a 19th century explorer. It consists of a base with five sections on which a temple is built.

Temple of the cross
This building once housed Count Waldeck, a 19th century explorer. It consists of a base with five sections on which a temple is built.

Temple of the Foliate Cross
Built on a raised piece of land covered with vegetation. Its name is due to the panel depicting maize emerging from the ground.

Temple of the Inscriptions
Named after three large panels with hieroglyphic inscriptions. The tomb of King Pacal, one of the most spectacular findings in the Mayan World, was discovered here.

Temple of the Sun

Distinguished by the fact that it is finished off with fine cresting. The Panel of the Sun, after which it was named, was carved in limestone.

The Palace
This is the most complex and beautiful construction in the Mayan area because of the way its spaces are handled and its intricate complex of buildings. It is built on a platform from which a three-story tower juts out.

Toniná
Site belonging to the Classic period consisting of large pyramidal bases, a ball court and a temple with a wooden lintel. Located 118 km outside Palenque very near the city of Ocosingo.

Yaxchilán
Major Mayan capital with stelae, altars and lintels in addition to its other buildings. Building 33 is the most spectacular of all those on the site. It is located 204 km outside Palenque and can be reached by air from Palenque or Villahermosa.
