Puerto Vallarta is rests in a tropical area on Mexico's Pacific Coast. It has verdant, green hills and a picturesque bay, Bahía de Banderas (Bay of Flags). Hotels line the bay's curving beach. The bay is usually calm but the water often has a brownish-green color which is not particularly attractive. This color will be most evident during the rainy season when rains and rivers carry soil from the surrounding hills into the bay. One can find clearer water south of town at Los Arcos and elsewhere. The arched rock formations of Los Arcosis a nice place for dive and snorkeling excursions.
The tropical setting, coconut palms, cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and red-tile roofs of Puerto Vallarta create an atmosphere that is both relaxed and festive. Visitors stroll along the malecón (beachfront walk). You can dine in one of the many cafés or restaurants, shop for local art, have a cold margarita, relax on a beach, or view the sculptures which adorn the area.
This is really a vacation destination for rest and relaxation. Activities are adequate, not abundant. Days are spent on the beach or by the pool. At night, however, Puerto Vallarta heats up and becomes a party town. Dinners is served late (if you choose). The discos and clubs such as Christine's get going around 11 p.m. and keep going well into the morning.
Puerto Vallarta vacation weather --- 336 days of sunshine per year. It is located on the same latitude as Hawaii, its sub-tropical climate is often compared to Hawaii's. The Temperature in Puerta Vallarta reaches 90 degrees F (32 C) during the summer, along with high humidity, but at night, a pleasant onshore breeze from the Bay of Banderas brings cool air that makes for comfortable sleeping conditions. The rainy season in Puerto Vallarta is June through September, however, August and September are considered the two "rainy" months. The average, September has 15 wet days per month, while January has only two. Rain usually doesn't start until late in the afternoon, leaving most of the day free for outdoor activities. The Bay of Banderas shelter the town from harsh Pacific winds and hard weather in winter. December and January, during the peak tourist season it is usually warm, sunny and dry, with enjoyable evenings.
