What to expect: Built in 2002, the Grand Velas typifies ultra-contemporary Mexican architecture with an open-air lobby with a 140-foot-high, thatched-roof ceiling and terrarium-like main hallways. The self-contained oceanfront resort attracts families and leisure travelers, with many guests passing their entire stay without leaving the property. Nearby golf courses, marinas, and shopping lure some guests away for day trips.

Amenity highlights: The Grand Velas has a 23,000-square-foot, three-tiered infinity pool with a swim-up bar and cushioned wooden lounge chairs. Guests can also use a children's pool, tennis and paddle tennis courts, and a fitness center. Health spa is to provide you with a sacred space devoted to the total wellness of body, mind, and sprit. Spa facility is 16,500 square feet with 23 cabins, more than 70 treatments and Spa reservations center. The resort's spa services (surcharge) include skin and nail treatments, hydrotherapy, a sauna, a steam room, and a beachside massage center. Guests can also take lessons in the resort's art and ceramics workshop.

Insider tip: In the town of Puerto Vallarta, 10 miles from the resort, guests can visit the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, which is the town's main church, located on Hidalgo Street. More than 100 years old, the cathedral is topped by an ornate crown. A schedule of church services is available at the resort's front desk.

The Grand Velas has a 23,000-square-foot, three-tiered infinity pool with a swim-up bar. Recreational facilities include tennis and paddle tennis courts, a children's pool, water-polo goals, and a water-sports center. A fitness center has stair machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, cross trainers, and weight-training machines. Aerobics, Pilates, yoga, and meditation classes are available. The resort's spa offers a variety of services (surcharge), including indoor and outdoor massage treatments, body wraps, facials, nail treatments, and hydrotherapy. The facilities include spa tubs, saunas, eucalyptus inhalation rooms, and steam rooms for men and women.

The resort offers wireless Internet access from almost anywhere on the property, including the pool and ocean-side restaurant (surcharge). Wireless modems are available for rental. A convention center provides 12,000 square feet of meeting space, including a ballroom with capacity for up to 700. Event catering, audio-visual services, and business services are also available.

Azul - Open-air, thatched-roof restaurant with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner served buffet-style or à la carte. The atmosphere is casual, with polished-wood furnishings and fresh flowers.

Frida - Named after artist Frida Kahlo, the resort's French-Mexican restaurant is open for dinner only. Tables are covered in white linen and topped by glowing candles. Men are requested to wear pants and collared shirts. Reservations required.

Lucca - Specializing in Mediterranean-Italian cuisine, Lucca is open for dinner only. Elegant atmosphere with woven tablecloths, wooden chairs, and warm indirect lighting. Men are requested to wear pants and collared shirts. Reservations required.

Lobby Bar - Featuring two stories of seating, a stage for live music, and a dance floor, this bar is a hub of evening activity. Drinks and appetizers are served.

Aqua Bar - Next to the pool, the Aqua Bar is the favorite during the day, when guests swim up to the bar for drink service.

Governors Suite 1 Bedroom - One bedroom with king or two queen beds. Features private terrace with ocean view, a separate living area with sofa bed, dining area, bar, and two bathrooms with shower, vanity mirror, and hairdryer. Private terrace offers ocean view and Jacuzzi, a separate living area with sofa bed, dining area, bar, and total of three bathrooms with shower, vanity mirror, and hairdryer. Room amenities include goose down comforters and pillows, minibar, coffee maker, laptop size safety box, iron and ironing board, 29-inch Satellite TV, direct dial telephones, dvd player, daily turndown service, chamber maid luggage unpacking service, air conditioning, and electronic key cards.

Ambassador Suite - One bedroom with king or two queen beds. Includes private ocean view terrace with Jacuzzi, separate living area with sofa bed, bathroom with shower, vanity mirror, and hairdryer. Room amenities include goose down comforters and pillows, full stocked minibar, daily turndown service, coffee maker, laptop size safety box, iron and ironing board, 29-inch Satellite TV, direct dial telephones, dvd player, air conditioning, and electronic key cards.

Master Suite - Contemporary teak, bamboo and wicker furnishings from Bali create a warm interior. Suites feature king bed with goose down comforter and pillows, bathroom with interior Jacuzzi, hair dryer, vanity mirror, and telephone in bathroom. Each room has its own private terrace with ocean view, direct dial telephone, air conditioning, laptop size safety box, iron and ironing board, minibar, electronic key cards, 29-inch TV, and dvd player.

Presidential Suite - Two bedrooms include king bed, bathroom with Jacuzzi, private shower and dressing area. One bedroom has two queen beds and bathroom with shower and dressing area. Located on the beach in Nuevo Vallarta, the Grand Velas has a three-tiered infinity pool with water-polo goals. Guests can use lighted tennis courts and a fitness center with stair machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, cross trainers, and weight-training machines. Aerobics, Pilates, yoga, and meditation classes are available. The resort's water-sports center offers snorkeling, wind surfing, and wave boarding. The 18-hole Marina Vallarta Golf Course is seven miles from the resort.
