Solar-powered eco-resort 2 hours from civilization

• Located 2 hours from Puerto Vallarta, the 30-room Hotelito is adjacent to a nature preserve, straddles an estuary, and fronts a beach.
• Rooms have wood floors, thatched roofs, handcrafted bed frames, balconies, and solar-powered ceiling fans, but no phones or televisions.
• In the hotel bar, modeled after an old Mexican pharmacy, guests can play pool by the glow of dozens of candles, which illuminate the resort after dark.

What to expect: Guests of Hotelito, mostly couples from all over the world, come to get away from the stresses of life and return to a time when life was simpler. And simple it is: Hotelito operates on solar power; there is no electricity, no phones, no Internet, and no television. The palapa -covered buildings are spread along an estuary and on the beach, just a short rowboat ride away. Each unit ( palafito ) has a small solar generator, powering a ceiling fan. At night, hundreds of candles and torches light the public areas, walkways, and rooms. Each July, sea turtles make their way to Hotelito's beach to lay their eggs, and a biologist helps oversee the hatching and fight-for-life process, supported by Hotelito staff and its guests.

Amenity highlights: Hotelito offers canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and windsurfers. There is a small pool, plus a long and deserted stretch of beachfront, ideal for sunbathing, volleyball, exploring, and horseback riding. The hotel's Mundo de Salud spa offers massages and body treatments, including hot-stone therapy. Instead of calling room service, guests raise a red flag on their terrace for morning coffee and cookies.

Insider tip: Guests can order wine by the bottle and request that any amount remaining be labeled and saved at the bar for the next meal.

Hotelito Desconocido Property Amenities Hotelito may be short on electrical appliances, but it is long on other amenities. The waters sports center offers canoes, rowboat, kayaks, and windsurfers. There is a swimming pool and shaded hammock area, plus horseback riding, bird watching, biking and, on some nights, an evening bonfire. For relaxation, guests lounge by the pool or visit the Mundo de Salud spa for a complimentary steam bath or other treatment. In the evenings, guests gather in the El Cantarito bar, for dinner, drinks, and billiards by candlelight. Transportation to and from Puerto Vallarta is available upon request (surcharge).

Guests of the hotel enjoy complimentary coffee and cookies each morning by raising a flag on their balcony.

El Cantarito - The hotel's rustic main restaurant is built on stilts over the estuary. It has a wooden floor, thatched-roof, and ceiling fans. The walls are painted a mellow yellow and decorated with local handicrafts and paintings. Blue leather handcrafted chairs. Bar modeled after an old-time drugstore, with an assortment of beers and liquors along the wall rather than medicines.

Nopalito - Nopalito is the hotel's ultra-casual beach club. It has a palapa roof and wooden furniture and offers lunch, tropical drinks, and sometimes dinner in an al fresco beachside location.

Palafito Suite - Rooms at Hotelito Desconocido are situated in 30 palafitos, simple bungalows of indigenous construction. Some are perched on stilts along the estuary with river views; the others view the Pacific Ocean from a broad sandbar. Wood floors, palapa roofs, unique Mexican decor. Bathrooms have bamboo showers, oversized bath towels, and the hotel's own handmade soaps, shampoos and natural bath oils. No electricity. Rooms are lit with candles at night and cooled by solar-powered celing fans by day. Beds are dressed in pure white cotton sheets and mosquito netting

Palafito Beachfront - Rooms at Hotelito Desconocido are situated in 30 palafitos, simple bungalows of indigenous construction. These palifitos are built on a sandbar facing the ocean, just 50 feet from the beach. Ocean and estuary views. Wood floors, palapa roofs, unique Mexican decor. Bathrooms have bamboo showers, oversized bath towels, and the hotel's own handmade soaps, shampoos and natural bath oils. No electricity. Rooms are lit with candles at night and cooled by solar-powered celing fans by day. Beds are dressed in pure white cotton sheets and mosquito netting.

Palafito Master Suite - Rooms at Hotelito Desconocido are situated in 30 palafitos, simple bungalows of indigenous construction. Master suites have one king bed or two queen beds in palfitos facing the ocean, just 50 feet from the beach. 800 square feet. Estuary and ocean views. Wood floors, palapa roofs, unique Mexican decor. Bathrooms have bamboo showers, oversized bath towels, and the hotel's own handmade soaps, shampoos and natural bath oils. No electricity. Rooms are lit with candles at night and cooled by solar-powered celing fans by day. Beds are dressed in pure white cotton sheets and mosquito netting.
