• Situated in Marina Vallarta, a prestigious resort/residential development north of Puerto Vallarta's hotel zone, this family-friendly resort includes acres of pools, sunning areas, and beach.
• The Westin's signature Heavenly Bed cossets guests in stylish, spacious guestrooms. Balconies or patios provide garden/pool views and/or views of Banderas Bay's magnificent, mountainous southern arm.
• Bordering the marina's docks and within a five-minute walk of The Westin Regina is a broad walkway lined with shops, Internet storefronts, bars, and restaurants. The Marina Vallarta Golf Club is a mile away.

What to expect: The resort attracts both couples and families. The hotel was designed by architect Javier Sordo Madaleno in a monumental style, with huge swatches of color (mango, bright-yellow, vivid-pink) and large, airy public spaces, including a hall lined by blue-tile waterfalls, shops, and fanciful, colorful animal statues from Oaxaca.

Amenity highlights: Palms create a light-and-shadow mosaic on four lagoon-style pools containing garden islands. The activities pool features a swim-up bar, jetted section, and tile lounges, as does an adults' pool. Another pool caters to children, and the fourth is for families. A sand section by the beach features curtained, wood-platform rental cabanas with cushioned teak lounges for 3-6 guests. Nikki Beach Restaurant includes a sand section with sunbathing beds.

Insider tip: The resort maintains a fenced-in nursery on the beach for hatching endangered-turtle eggs during the nesting season. When turtles hatch (July-January), guests assist in releasing them to the sea.

A health spa offers massage, body wraps and scrubs, and reflexology and contains women's and men's saunas, steam rooms, and Swiss showers. The spa includes a couples-massage room and also offers oceanside, open-air massage. A children's club open during the day for ages 3-12 provides three hours daily of complimentary, supervised activities in an air-conditioned clubhouse and outdoors. Ground transportation:

Featuring palm-tree and garden islands and surrounded by sundecks furnished with cushioned teak lounge chairs, four lagoon-style pools ranging from 68.5 to 50 meters long (225 to 165 ft) offer a variety of swimming opportunities. The largest pool contains a swim-up bar, a jetted section, and tile lounges, as does an adults' pool. Another pool caters to children, with tubes and floats available for rent, and the fourth is for families.

Three semi-circular, artificial coves distinguish the resort's 300-meter (328-yard) beach frontage, which is furnished with padded lounge chairs and umbrellas. A private sand section adjoining the beach features curtained, wood-platform rental cabanas with cushioned teak lounges for 3-6 people. The beachfront, indoor/outdoor Nikki Beach Restaurant & Bar also includes a private sand section, this one furnished with sunbathing beds reserved for customers.

A water-sports center rents boogie boards, kayaks, sailboats, and snorkeling gear and also offers fishing trips and scuba-diving instruction/excursions. Independent operators on a beach adjacent to the resort offer parasail, personal watercraft and banana-boat rentals/services.

An expansive, air-conditioned, mirrored-wall fitness center (daily surcharge) contains cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and a workout studio offering spinning and Pilates classes (surcharges). Oceanfront yoga classes are also available (surcharges).

The resort includes three lights artificial-grass tennis courts (surcharges). The clubhouse for the 18-hole championship Marina golf course lies 600 meters (656 yds) from the resort.
