Festivals
The "Sanmiguelada" This is the three-day festival in honor of the town's patron saint, starting on September 29. The celebrations commence with a parade of flower offerings called xúchiles; there is then a dance put on by the concheros (dancers dressed in colorful Aztec garb, including feather headdresses); on the last day, young bulls are let loose in the streets in what is known as the "Pamplonada". At night, there are performances by bands and estudiantinas (groups of singing minstrels formed by students).
La Sanmiguelada, held in late September, is the culmination of the fiesta season that begins with the commemoration of Independence Day on the 16th. On the day of its patron saint, the city wakes up at dawn to see the fireworks adorning the Parroquia. The celebrations, which include a bullfight, reach a climax when fighting bulls are released into the streets in the center.
