<<< Back To San Miguel de Allende Overview

There are several signs of San Miguel's importance during the colonial era. Foremost among these are the religious and civil buildings financed by don Manuel de la Canal, as well as the treasures they contain, such as altarpieces, sculptures and several paintings by the finest artists of the time.
Some of the most striking examples include the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a late 17th century building to which Zeferino Torres, a master stonemason, added a neo-Gothic tower in 1880.
Casa de Allende This 18th century mansion has a beautiful neo classical entrance, a façade with carved cantera stone windows frames, ironwork balconies and a stone niche on one of the corners with a sculpture of Ignacio Allende. The rooms around the interior patio are currently exhibition rooms of a museum.
Church and monastery of La Concepcion Known as "Las Monjas", built in 1755 for the daughter of Francisco de la Canal who joined a religious order. The convent is currently occupied by the "El Nigromante" Cultural Center, named after the liberal writer Ignacio Ramírez. Open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm and Sundays from 10 to 2 pm. Hernández Macías 75, centro. Tel. 20 289.
Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel Late 17th century construction to which Zeferino Torres, the master stonemason, added a neo-gothic tower in 1880. Open from 5:30 to 9:00 pm.
Teaching Centers The two most important teaching centers are the ¿El Nigromante¿ Cultural Center, where Siqueiros taught, and the Allende Institute. They each offer courses in painting and sculpture, illustration and ceramics and other subjects ranging from colonial art to cooking. Lectures and concerts are also given and both have galleries where students display their work.
