Bella Italia

A fine Italian restaurant in the beautiful garden patio and under the colonial arches of one of San Miguel's oldest hotels, the Sautto. Try their delicious cheese stuffed shrimp.

In business for more than 50 years, this charming patio restaurant, housed in a beautiful colonial home, serves exquisite traditional Mexican food accompanied by pleasant guitar music.


Café de la Parroquia

  • OPEN: Open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; to 2 p.m. Sunday.
  • CLOSED: Monday

The ideal place for a delicious breakfast or lunch in a small, sun-filled patio. Good coffees, Mexican and international dishes, soft classical music. Very popular.


Café Santa Ana
In a restored 17th-century building next to the Public Library

Charming cafe with tables set in a pleasant plant-filled patio. The international menu offers creative gourmet dishes.


El Campanario

Celebrating 10 years in business, this elegant restaurant is housed in a colonial-era building decorated with stained-glass art. An extensive international menu features select cuts of beef in a variety of sauces, and fish and seafood specialties. Open-air terrace seating with a view of the church towers.

NOTE: Trios, mariachis or soloists play from 8 p.m. Open 1 to 11 p.m., except Thursday.


El Mesón de San José

Dine on Mexican, international and vegetarian dishes in an attractive patio setting. There's live romantic music nightly (7 to 9 p.m.) and South American music Sunday afternoons (2 to 4 p.m.).


El Palacio Chino

Owner Mike Chen has brought the art of Chinese cooking to San Miguel with a menu that features Mandarin, Hunan and Szechwan cuisines. Favorites include crispy chicken in a sweet-and-spicy sauce and walnut shrimp. El Dragon bar specializes in martinis and tequilas. Also cigar bar. Courtyard seating, private dining room.

El Pegaso

A restaurant-bar serving everything from excellent sandwiches and soups to T-bone steaks. Folk art, including masks from throughout Mexico, deck the walls and are for sale. Popular gathering place for foreign residents.


Harry Bissett's New Orleans Café

A New Orleans-style restaurant offering Creole and Cajun cooking, including gumbo.


Las Margaritas

Tasteful Mexican colonial decor and refined Mexican cuisine are the hallmarks of this elegant restaurant. Specialties include duck in a jalapeño and olive sauce, and mango quail. Piano music accompanies diners.


La Capilla

  • CLOSED: Tuesday

Housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century building, this restaurant and art gallery features a fine collection of antiques from around the world, and regional and international dishes. Nestled next to the church, with a great view of the comings and goings at the main plaza from its garden patio and upstairs terrace. Live music.

NOTE: Sunday Champagne brunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.


La Finestra

A cozy European-style restaurant-cafe that's great for people-watching. Their fresh-baked pastries and variety of coffees get the day off to a good start. Menu features nouveau Mexican cuisine.

NOTE: Live music weekend evenings.


La Princesa

Offering a la carte service or a fixed-price menu of salad, soup, entrée, dessert, coffee, and a margarita, daiquiri or beer.

A magnet for visitors and locals alike. Good international and Italian fare, including pizzas, pastas and fish, served in a large colorful patio. Flamenco and Latin American folk music entertain diners in the evening. The adjoining bar, to the right of the entrance, is a big hit.

Situated in a large, covered patio with a wide screen TV for watching sporting events, this spot specializes in authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. Try the BBQ ribs, baked beans and delectable homemade desserts.

Reminiscent of a typical Mexican village, this restaurant offers good Mexican and international food, including fine cuts of beef and delicious desserts. Their breakfast special is blueberry pancakes.

A popular watering hole for locals and tourists, with a lively bar area, charming open-air patio, and a lot of decor dangling from the ceiling. Specialties are Mexican cuisine and fine cuts of beef with a variety of sauces, including chateaubriand. There's a good jazz/blues band in the evenings from 8:30. Owner Max Altamirano personally supervises everything.
