Tuxtla: Among the tourist attractions in Tuxtla Gutierrez are Miguel Alvarez del Toro zoo, Fausto Miranda Botanical Garden, the House of Handicrafts, the Marimba Park, the Regional Museum of Chiapas and San Marcos Cathedral.
MANUEL ALVAREZ DEL TORO ZOO
his zoo is located 15 minutes from the Capital of the State, where you can watch more than 500 species of reptiles, mammals and birds in their natural habitat. It also has an area where many small animals live and night house, where there are animals with nightly habits.
In the zoo you will watch the biggest feline of America, the jaguar, as well as tapir, royal eagle, squirrel, monkey and a wide variety of birds, such as the snazzy peacock, which is the symbol of the zoo.
The entire zoo is one of the most remarkable of the world, where animals live in freedom. Furthermore it has a library and a bookstore specialized in tropical fauna.
FAUSTO MIRANDA BOTANICAL GARDEN
The garden opened in 1951 and has 4 hectares (9 acres) on the margin of the Sabanal River, it includes 98% of the vegetable species of different regions of the State, the rest are plants that have been adapted to the conditions, soil and weather of the State.
This place has a fresh and calm environment within the city, where you can watch several flowers during a walking tour among trails with trees and bush areas from the high, medium and low jungles, cactus, medicinal plants, and ornamental plants, among other species.
You can finish your tour with a brief visit to the Botanical Museum, where there are fossil and tropical woods of the State of Chiapas with their applications in handicrafts and the industry.
REGIONAL MUSEUM OF CHIAPAS
Founded in 1940, it is circled by gardens in a modern, beautiful building. Here, there are all kinds of archaeological findings and art pieces from Mesoamerica, as well as information about the History of the State of Chiapas, from the Sixteenth Century to the present time.
There are some outstanding figures and wood carved pieces from Colonial times. Also, there is an exhibition of clothing and everyday objects from different ethnic groups that live in the State. Also, there is a library and guided service.
SAN MARCOS CATHEDRAL
The cathedral is located next to the Civil Plaza at downtown. It was built in the Sixteenth Century. However, it became a cathedral until 1965. The building has suffered many transformations along the centuries, the most recent reconstruction gave it its present appearance.
It has a peculiar musical system in its clock, every hour it plays religious songs and 12 dolls, representing the Apostles, march in the middle of the tower, a singular construction in Latin America.
LA MARIMBA PARK
This park has become a space for family recreation. In its Gazebo, parties are organized, where many musical groups that play marimba (a traditional musical instrument from the State) at sundown, the best hour to visit this beautiful place.
THE HOUSE OF HANDICRAFTS
Here, there is a wide selection of pieces made by the artisans of the region with the best quality, who use their imagination to play with colors, shapes and textures to make fine works in fibers, amber, carved woods, basketry, wrought iron, lacquer, gold and other materials.
You can finish the handicraft tour with a visit to a museum that shows scenes of several ethnic groups in the State. Also, there are some winning pieces from the State annual handicraft contest. |
