LAGARTOS RIVER
The main characteristic of this beautiful natural landscape is the lush vegetation. It is a shelter of the beautiful pink flamingo, which you can watch gathered in groups dancing on the swamps, or flying over the region. The river is named after the thousands of alligators that inhabited the region in the past.
ZAMAL
In this city the henequen region is located, where there are many cenotes. It is known as "The City of the Hills". Here, there are magnificent Mayan vestiges, such as the Cerro of Kinichkakmo, with the its impressive stairs; there are remarkable samples of Colonial architecture, as well.
Near the City you will find the Izamal archaeological site, with its many buildings painted in yellow. Thus, inhabitants refer to this place as the "Yellow City".
In Izamal was built a beautiful Franciscan Convent on top of the base of a Mayan pyramid, which a large atrium, with arches and stairs. It is the biggest in Latin America.
Furthermore, outside the city the magnificent "cenote" Xcolac is located.
CENOTE ZACÍ
This is one of the most fascinating "cenotes" (wells) in the Peninsula of Yucatan. The entrance is though a natural tunnel and you enter through a series of stairs under a rock, which is hanging over the pond below.
Through its crystal-clear turquoise-blue water you can see he strange formations of stalagmites and stalactites.
Near the "cenote" (deep well) there is a restaurant and an outdoor theater where some cultural activities take place. Also, next to the "cenote" is a small zoo with spider monkey, "tepezcuintles" (Aztec dog) and King buzzard.
DZITNUP
This "cenote" (deep well). Located 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Valladolid there is a large underground chamber, that offers a great spectacle of its formations of stalactites, lit by the natural light that gets in through a hollow in the center of the cave. In its crystal-clear water you will see fish swimming.
CHICHEN ITZA
This is an impressive Mayan ceremonial center, located East of the City of Merida. It has majestic buildings, such as the impressive Pyramid Kukulkan, a symbol of the Mayan calendar. In this temple, each spring equinox, a strange thing happens: the sunshine draws on the edge of the stairs the profile of a feathered serpent.
Among other buildings, there is the Ball Game, the One Thousand Columns Temple, Los Tableros (boards) Temple, the Casa Colorada (Red House) and El Caracol (the winkle) or Observatory.
Besides, there are two beautiful wells, called "Sagrado" (Sacred) and X'Toloc.
BALANCANCHE
This is a large grout, located 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Chichen Itza, which used to be a Mayan religious place. Its countless stalactites and stalagmites form an impressive column in the shape of an altar, where the ancient Mayas presented their offerings to the Water Gods and Goddess.
