Lying 43 km northeast of Veracruz, the former indigenous settlement of Cempoala was the first important place where the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés confronted the Totonac Indians led by the famous "fat cacique" as he was known because of his corpulence. Nowadays, the archaeological remains consist of a large pyramid, the temples of Las Caritas, Las Chimeneas, and the God of the Air. Tourists will also be able to visit the greatest pre-Hispanic work of Totanac art at El Tajín, approximately 235 km outside Veracruz. The many fascinating remains there include the monumental Pyramid of the Niches.
Cempoala Cempoala was the first important Indian settlement that Hernán Cortés came across on his journey to the Aztec capital. There are remains of pyramids and temples with reliefs in stone and mural paintings of the founding of the settlement in 1200. The archeological site is located 43 km northwest of Veracruz.
El Tajín The Huasteca site of El Tajín, located 240 km from Veracruz, is the most important archeological site in this state. The culture reached its peak several thousand years ago and left us remains of structures and pelota game courts, as well as the extraordinary Pirámide de los Nichos (The Pyramid of Niches). There are also mural paintings, reliefs and an interesting on-site museum.
