Archaeology In the center of the city of Villahermosa stands one of the most impressive theme parks in the country. Built on the banks of the Laguna de las Ilusiones by Carlos Pellicer, the distinguished poet, it is divided into two areas: one devoted to the rich fauna of the region and the other to the monumental Olmec archaeological remains.
Comalcalco Archeological site Located some 91 km northwest of Villahermosa, this site, whose style was influenced by the Mayan style in Palenque, is made up of groups of pyramids, palaces, temples, patios and tombs. These structures were not made of rock or stone, but rather of bricks, clay, sand, and shells. This settlement reached its peak between 800 and 1,200 years ago.
La Venta Museum-Park The Tabascan poet, Carlos Pellicer, wanted to do something worthwhile to preserve the pre Hispanic objects found at the La Venta archeological site; as a result, this museum that has exhibitions of steles, altars, and monumental Olmec heads was built on Avenida Ruiz Cortines. All these pieces are carved out of stone, with the exception of the work called "The Jaguar's Cage"
Cuisine All riverside cities are inextricably bound to the rhythm of their rivers and Villahermosa is no exception. It maintains a two-way, contradictory relationship with the Grijalva , which is why everything recalls the river: the wharf, boat trips on the Capitán Beuló (a former health boat converted into a floating restaurant) that sails up and down the river serving delicious meals while telling diners about the history of the city, and the parks built in the bends of the river on its way to the sea.
Festivals In April, the city comes alive with its Tabasco Regional Fair, with its agricultural, industrial, commercial, sports and cultural displays, colorful dances and traditional costumes.
Historical Interest The village of Cupilco , 42 km outside Villahermosa , jealously protects the image of the Virgen de la Asunción in its brightly-colored, picturesque church. Legend has it that in 1634, the inhabitants of the nearby village of Ayapa found an image of a Virgin in a boat lying on the seashore. They took the statue to various churches and noticed that during the night, the Virgin would change position and always ended up facing Cupilco . They therefore decided to leave her where she is now, on her altar, accompanied by the Holy Sacrament.
The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church This picturesque, colorful church, located in the village of Cupilco , 45 km northeast of Villahermosa , is well known for an image that has been kept there since the 17th century. It is said that this image of Our Lady of the Ascencion that was found in the sea ¿did not want¿ to be kept at any other church.
