Persian Wonders Itinerary

DAYS 1 - 3, Thursday - Saturday - Depart for Tehran, IRAN
Visit Tehran's major museums, including the Golestan Palace Museum (Palace of Flowers). There, in the former official residence of the Qjr Kings of Persia, you will see the famous Peacock Throne, a beautiful gold and jewel-encrusted chair that has been used by every Iranian monarch. Also visit the incomparable Treasury of National Iranian Jewels which houses the world's most precious jewelry collection, whose history goes back 25 centuries.

DAYS 4 & 5, Sunday & Monday - Kerman, Mahan & Rayen
At Kerman, you will visit the Ganjali Khan complex, built during the Safavid era (1501-1722), the caravanserai and bazaar, bathhouse and Friday Mosque. The beautiful 17th-century public bath serves as an anthropology museum today.Masjed-e Jame (Jame Mosque), a 14th-century historical monument, is famous for its magnificent portal, mihrab and mosaic tile decorations. In Mahan, visit a blue-tiled 14th-century mausoleum and the Shahzadeh Garden.

DAYS 6 & 7, Tueday & Wednesday - Yazd
Discover Yazd, the center of Iran's small Zoroastrian community. Air, water, earth and fire are holy elements to the 3,500-year-old religion. You will see the Towers of Silence (dakhma) and visit the Zoroastrian Fire Temple (teshgh), where the sacred fire has burned permanently for over 1,500 years. Yazd's Friday Mosque has the highest portal and minarets in Iran.

DAYS 8 & 9, Thursday & Friday - Pasargadae, Naghsh-e-Rostam & Persepolis
Stop in Abarkuh, a charming desert town, to have tea under the shade of a 4,000- year-old cypress tree. Visit the ruins of Pasargadae (Psargd), site of the royal residence and the austere tomb of Cyrus the Great (559-530 B.C.). At the royal cemetery at Naqsh-e Rostam, the four Achaemenian tombs are dug into a rock face. Eight Sassanian bas-reliefs are carved on the same rock face, one in very high relief, with the horses almost free standing. The Kaaba of Zoroaster is opposite the tombs, which is considered to be an Achaemenian fire temple. Continue to Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid), also known as Parsa. It is the most impressive archaeological site in Iran for its sheer size and fine examples of Achaemenian carving.

DAYS 10 - 12, Saturday - Monday - Shiraz & Isfahan
Shiraz, the cradle of Persian history, is the city of poets, roses and nightingales. See the Bgh-e Erm Garden which contains the Qjr Palace. View the Mausoleum of Hfez, Iran's greatest lyric poet, and the Nasir-al-Molk Mosque, unique for its tile work and architecture. Go to the Vakil Bazaar and wander through this incredible labyrinth of merchants. Set amidst a lush oasis, Isfahan is one of Iran's most beautiful cities and its monuments can be ranked among the most splendid in the Islamic world. Naqsh-e-Jahan Square is surrounded by beautiful buildings including: Ali Qpu Palace; the Mosque of Sheikh Lotfallah, also known as the Ladies Mosque; and Iman Mosque, flanked by two turquoise minarets. Stroll through the Bazaar Qausrieh, with hundreds of shops displaying arts and handicrafts. Visit the Chehel Sotun Palace, now a museum.

DAYS 13 & 14, Tuesday & Wednesday - Tehran & Depart for Home
The National Museum of Iran has a marvelous collection of archaeological artifacts dating from the 5th and 4th millennium B.C. Discover the Carpet Museum, housing a spectacular collection of Persian rugs. And lastly, you'll see wonderful displays of architectural decoration at the Islamic Period Museum and old Persian glass and ceramics at the Abgineh Museum.
