This week-long trip focuses on the highlights of the South Island, considered by most New Zealanders to be more rugged and possessing more spectacular scenery than the North Island. Begin your exploration in Christchurch, a charming place with a distinctively English feel and roots. From here, you will have a chance to visit Kaikoura to see the famous whales and dolphins that frolic offshore. Next, you will enjoy the TranzAlpine train to Greymouth, where you will begin your self-drive along the rugged West Coast to Franz Josef Glacier for a heli-hike excursion. Transfer to Queenstown, the self-described “adventure capital” of the country, for a day at Doubtful Sound (accessed by helicopter).
