Avoiding the rugged interior, the road to Coromandel hugs the coast, passing on its way enticing sandy beaches and idyllic little bays dotted with yachts.

Coromandel township has managed to retain some of its colonial character in a few lovely old buildings from the Victorian era. It was here that gold was first discovered in New Zealand in 1852, but today the town's prosperity rests in its function serving the surrounding dairy farms and as a popular holiday resort. Stores selling handicrafts, along with potter's workshops hint at the lifestyle that has attracted many artists and crafts-people to this quiet part of the country.

Not that 'dropping-out'means being impractical: the potter Barry Brickell originally built himself a little railway to transport clay to his workshop, but now helps make it pay by offering rides to tourists. The Coromandel School of Mines Museum recalls the gold rush days and a working stamper battery just north of town shows how gold was separated from quartz. Of all the larger settlements on the Peninsula it is Coromandel that has the most relaxed atmosphere.
