Russell was the first capital of New Zealand and one of the first European settlements. The town is rich in history with a variety of shops and services that do not spoil the old charm. Hours can be spent in the museum tracing the towns history from the first European settlers, whaling and marine history. Even the headstones at New Zealand’s first church have a story to tell.

Shops include 2 supermarkets, bakery, liquor stores, video rental, hardware, news agent, chemist (drug store), business centre, famous fish & chips, antiques, gifts, fuel, fishing tackle, dive fills, attraction booking offices, hardware, fashion, antiques, pottery and more/

Restaurants cater from cafe and bistro dining to award winning world class and even a vineyard restaurant nearby. Bars range from the famous Duke of Marlborough hotel to the Bay of Island Swordfish club. Entertainment varies from jazz in the “Duke” to summer rock bands in the marquee.

Passenger ferries operate continuously to the tourist town of Paihia where additional shops and attractions can be found. A number of attractions leave from Russell wharf including the fast Excitor trip to the hole in the rock, R Tucker Thomson sailing ship, fishing charters and dolphin encounter cruisers. A medical clinic and chemist are also in the main shopping area. The wharf is a hive of activity with Paihia ferries, game fishing boats, tours and boats refueling coming and going.  If you are planning a trip to New Zealand, Northland is must for the itinerary and Russell is an ideal base to explore the region.

Sacred Space features three unique suites, all with ensuites, original art and antique furnishings. The commodious Kingfisher Suite occupies the entire upstairs and enjoys four exposures, all with superb views. There is a small bed-sitting room adjacent to another private bathroom. Fishing

The Bay of Islands is situated in the north of the North Island of New Zealand which is world-renowned for its sub tropical climate, exceptional beauty and scenery and the birthplace of our nation. With special thanks to the famous American, author Zane Grey, the Bay has won world acclaim as “An Angler’s El Dorado” – a book he wrote in the 1920’s, after fishing here and discovering that New Zealand offered an abundance of the largest striped marlin in the world.

The Bay provides the angler with the opportunity to catch or target any of the gamefish species which migrate and frequent our coastal waters from December through to June. Black Marlin – Blue Marlin – Striped Marlin – and don’t forget our magnificent Broadbill – are all available over our summer months. Yellowfin – Big Eye – Pacific Blue – Albacore – are but a few of the species of tuna targeted, along with our Yellowtail Kingfish. Sharks are readily available for our anglers, if they so desire with special emphasis on our Mako sharks, renowned throughout the world for its exceptional fighting ability.

In 1924, the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club was founded with the intention of preserving and recording the fishing stocks here in the Bay. The northern tip of New Zealand is now enjoying an increasing annual catch of our gamefish species, thanks to three major initiatives introduced in the late 1980’s:

• Our 200 mile economic fishing zone against foreign commercial fishing fleets.
• Banning all commercial sales of marlin caught in New Zealand.
• The Tag and Release programme, which is an option for each individual angler.

Health & Fitness

At Eagles Nest we know you may require to keep your fitness levels up during your leisure time and with this in mind please take note of the services we can provide for you. The Estate provides professional mountain bikes for your enjoyment within the Estate or perhaps a picturesque ride along one of the Department of Conservation tracks dotted throughout Russell, alternatively there is a 1.5 Km jogging circuit that partially includes the Estate, this takes in medium to high levels of fitness depending on the distance and the degree of difficulty you may require, however the circuit is a great way to enjoy the environs of Tapeka Point and Eagles Nest.
