Akaroa, New Zealand Vacations, Toursand Travel Packages
Akaroa was originally intended as a French colony but, to the dismay of the colonists who arrived from France in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi had already been signed and New Zealand was now under British sovereignty. The French stayed on, nevertheless, and the Gallic influence persists in many of Akaroa's street names (Rue Jolie, Rue Benoit) and the French-flavoured menus of some local restaurants.
The town itself is quite charming; it stretches along a palm-fringed waterfront with quaint little cottages dotted here and there. The oldest house in town, and possibly Canterbury, is Langlois-Eteveneaux Cottage (1841-45). Behind the cottage is a museum that deals with Akaroa's colourful history. Other places of interest are the picture-postcard Church of St Patrick (1864) and the historic Akaroa Lighthouse (1878).
But apart from viewing any specific sights, it is also nice to just wander about town and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the place. For those who linger, a perfect way to end the day would be with a bottle of (New Zealand) wine and a seafood meal at the Pier Café, or any of the other restaurants in town for that matter. Akaroa is, all in all, a great place to while away a few days.
