Canterbury Museum

At the end of Worcester Boulevard, on Rolleston Avenue, is the Canterbury Museum. Among the most interesting displays is the reconstruction of a Christchurch street from the pioneer days, and the Hall of Antarctic Discovery where exhibits chart the trials and tribulations of antarctic exploration. The recently opened gallery Iwi Tawhito - Whenua Hou (Ancient People - New Land) takes visitors far back into New Zealand's pre-European past, to a time when the now extinct giant moas were hunted by the early Polynesian ancestors of today's modern Maori.

Directly behind the museum, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery has large permanent collections of New Zealand and international art.

The Hagley Parks

Access to the art gallery is through the Botanic Gardens which, combined with the adjacent South and North Hagely Parks, spread out behind the museum like a green oasis in the middle of the city. Bordered by the gently flowing Avon River, with magnificent old trees providing shade and luxuriant flower beds adding a splash of colour, the gardens make a very pleasant setting for a relaxing stroll. A tea kiosk offers light refreshments.
