Geraldine, New Zealand Vacations, Tours and Luxury Travel Packages

Geraldine is a nice little town with a few interesting things to see and do in the vicinity. About 12 miles (20km) north of town is Peel Forest Park, one of the few remaining stands of native forest in the area. There is a good camping ground here for those who enjoy a secluded setting, as well as some lovely picnic spots in the forest.

Some of the park's well-marked trails lead to waterfalls but the Big Tree Walk (1 hour) leads, appropriately enough, to a huge totara tree with a circumference of over 29ft (9m). At the end of the road that leads on from the forest park is Mesopotamia, a sheep run once owned by the great English writer Samuel Butler, who briefly tried his luck as a sheep farmer back in the 1860's.

In Geraldine itself, the Vintage Car and Machinery Museum is worth a look for those interested in things technical and just out of town, in the direction of Fairlie, visitors can enjoy the taste of elderberry wine at Barker's Wines.
