Methven, New Zealand Ski Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

The base for winter activities at Mount Hutt is Methven, a short distance from SH72. Obviously this town is at its liveliest during the winter months when tourists with sun-tanned faces strut down the
main street looking for the best place to enjoy their apres-ski. However, there are things to do in summer too when trendy ski clothes are exchanged for the gumboots and check-shirts of a small farming town. Apart from a beautiful 18-hole golf course there is good walking (Mt Hutt Forest) and fishing in the vicinity, as well as the possibility of jet boat rides through the dramatic Rakaia Gorge. A walkway allows a more leisurely look at the gorge (3-4 hours return).

At the intersection of state highways 72 and 73 the visitor can either choose to go left for a last close look at the Alps in the vicinity of Arthur's Pass, or turn right on the road to Christchurch. For those who are starting their exploration of the South Island from Christchurch, the Arthur's Pass Road can be highly recommended as a very scenic route to the 'Wild West Coast'.
