Canvastown, New Zealand Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages

The road turns inland from Havelock to pass the old gold mining settlement of Canvastown. Gold was discovered here in 1860 but the real rush did not take place until four years later when larger deposits were found. Many of the prospectors erected simple canvas dwellings while they worked their claims, hence the name 'Canvastown'. The rush was already over by 1865 but a few determined souls continued prospecting well into this century. Visitors who want to try their luck at gold panning can do so by inquiring at Pinedale Motorcamp. It is claimed that enough gold can be sluiced in one day to pay for accommodation! The necessary equipment is provided.

After Canvastown the road heads towards Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, where there are some pleasant walks, and then continues to the township of Rai Valley from where a short detour can be made
to the old pioneer cottage (1881) at Carluke. Now it is just a matter of climbing over the forested Rai Saddle and passing through a few more small settlements to reach the coast and Nelson.
