Kahurangi National Park Tours
The other way to come to grips with nature from Collingwood is to go on a walk through the unspoiled wilderness of Kahurangi National Park (formerly North-West Nelson State Forest Park). Established in 1995 and covering an area of 930,547 acres (376,572 hectares) this is not only New Zealand's second largest National Park, it is also its newest. Around 50 per cent of the country's native plant species, over 100 bird species and a labyrinthine cave system are to be found here.

The Heaphy Track

Probably the most well-known walk in the park is the Heaphy Track (6 days). The track was named after Charles Heaphy, an explorer, artist and surveyor who explored much of the region in the 1840's. It can be started near Collingwood and comes out on the West Coast near Karamea, a total distance of about 46 miles (75km). Transport is available to and from both ends of the track with Collingwood Safari Tours.

A highlight of the Heaphy is the coastal section where exotic-looking nikau palms fringe lonely beaches. The nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida) is the only palm tree in the world that grows naturally at such southerly latitudes. It is found throughout the North Island and in the South Island as far south as Greymouth.

The Karamea River Track

Much less travelled than the Heaphy Track, which is part of the DOC's Great Walks system, is the Leslie-Karamea (Karamea River Track). It goes through the same forest park as the Heaphy but is longer (7 to 8 days) and, in the opinion of the authors, it is a more interesting though more difficult walk.

Access to the track is along the scenic Cobb Dam Road, off SH60 near Upper Takaka. The track exits the park near Little Wanganui, a short distance south of Karamea. This last part of the walk follows a section of the Wangapeka Track. The very energetic could return to Golden Bay along the Heaphy. For more information about the track contact the DOC office at Nelson or Takaka.

From Collingwood return along SH60 to Motueka. Now take SH61 south to the junction with SH6. A side road (Upper Motueka Valley Road) branches off SH6 via Golden Downs and Kikiwa to reach St Arnaud, the gateway to Nelson Lakes National Park.
