Kaikoura has a lovely setting on a small peninsula with breathtaking views of the Seaward Kaikoura Range. The view of the mountains, which rise abruptly from the sea to heights of well over 6,561ft (2,000m), is especially beautiful in winter when snow caps the peaks. This dramatic tableau would have been enough in itself to justify a stop, but it is the chance to go whale-watching that now brings the tourists in their thousands.
