Tobacco farming, orchards, forestry and fishing have all combined to make Nelson a prosperous city. Nearly surrounded by hills, Nelson enjoys an equable climate and gets more than its fair share of sunshine, as do most places in the north of the South Island. The city also has a justifiable reputation for its fine parks and an excellent beach at Tahunanui only a few kilometres away, adds to the natural attractions.
Focal point of the city is the rather unattractive cathedral (1925-65), which has at least a beautiful setting atop a hill at the end of the main street. Not far away the South Street Gallery serves as a display case for the work of some of Nelson's leading potters. The relative seclusion of this region, coupled with a more relaxed pace of life, has proved to be a magnet for many craftspeople, but especially potters have been drawn here by the excellent local clays.
Located in Queen's Gardens on Bridge Street the Suter Art Gallery is mainly interesting for its collection of paintings by important New Zealand artists such as Gully, Woollaston, Lindauer and Hodgkins. There is a nice restaurant here and the work of local potters can be seen in an attached craft shop.
Something of Nelson's history can be felt by visiting Founders Park, at 87 Atawai Drive. A few of Nelson's old buildings have been relocated here to recreate the atmosphere of a nineteenth century village. There are some more historic buildings scattered around town with Melrose House (1876) on the corner of Brougham and Trafalger Streets being one of the most impressive.
