From Te Anau the way south continues via Manapouri, on the shores of beautiful Lake Manapouri.

In the 1970's this idyllic piece of New Zealand was the subject of an intense environmental controversy. The government wanted to raise the level of the lake by 39ft (12m) to generate electricity for the aluminium smelter at Bluff. Massive protests prevented the worst, and though the hydroelectric scheme went ahead, the lake was not raised to levels that would have dramatically altered the local environment.

Today it is possible to visit the hydro station, a trip that can be recommended even for environmentalists, if only because it is the most convenient way to visit isolated Doubtful Sound.
