The first boatload of Scots arrived at Port Chalmers, Dunedin's port, in 1848 to take up land that had been bought from the local Maori for about a penny an acre. Though the first settlers were mainly Scottish and Presbyterian by faith, there were also enough Englishmen around to allow some scope for traditional frictions to come to the fore. Job advertisements sometimes carried the line 'Englishmen need not apply' and the early settlement's leader, Captain William Cargill, once directed an English gentleman to go back to Canterbury (a predominantly English settlement) 'where he belonged'.

In the 1860's the Otago gold rushes brought sudden prosperity to the town. They stimulated not only a dramatic increase in population, but also provided a firm economic basis for the rapid development of industry and agriculture. For many years Dunedin was the most important manufacturing and commercial city in the country.

Legacies of this early wealth are the city's many fine old Victorian buildings and the country's first university and medical school. Though still an important industrial area (heavy engineering), it is in the role of a university town that Dunedin now commands most recognition. The 14,000 or so students have a pervasive influence on the city's day-to-day life, as is reflected in the many student pubs, the cheap cafés and the vibrant local arts and entertainments scene.
