When in Dunedin do not leave without making the side trip to Otago Peninsula. Though within easy reach of the city, the peninsula is unique in that it provides a breeding habitat for such rare or seldom seen birds as the royal albatross and yellow-eyed penguin. There is enough to see and do here to keep most visitors occupied for a full day, but at least a half day is necessary for the main attractions. A pleasant circular tour of the peninsula can be made by first following the coast road (Portobello Road) and then Highcliff Road back to Dunedin.
