Greymouth, New Zealand Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages

Greymouth is the largest town on the West Coast and with a wide range of accommodation it serves as a good base for outdoor activities in the area. Visitors can try their luck at gold-panning, go on a rafting adventure or join one of the scenic tours to old goldmining sites. There is plenty of good walking in the area and excellent trout fishing in the local rivers as well as at Lake Brunner further inland.

In spring people can be seen netting whitebait at the mouth of the Grey River. Whitebait are tiny fish (actually the young of the Galaxiidae family of fish) that are considered a real delicacy, not only on the Coast but all over New Zealand. They are usually cooked in batter and well worth trying if one has the chance.

Attractions

An interesting feature of town is the so-called 'Great Wall of Greymouth'. This stone barrier was erected in recent years to protect the town from the sometimes catastrophic flooding of the Grey River.

But probably the biggest single attraction in the vicinity of Greymouth is Shantytown, 5 miles (8km) further south. This replica of a typical West Coast gold mining town gives a good feeling for pioneering life at the turn of last century. It almost goes without saying that you can pan for gold here (they even guarantee that you will find some!) and a short ride on the quaint old steam train through native bush is also great fun.

For those who want to cross the Southern Alps to Christchurch there is a daily rail link from Greymouth with the TranzAlpine Express. There is also a bus link via Arthur's Pass but in either case the trip over the Alps is quite spectacular. Otherwise this route along the coast continues to Hokitika.
