At Makarora on the far side of the pass there is a Visitor Centre for Mount Aspiring National Park (the road over Haast Pass actually cuts through the northern extremities of the park) and a tea room. The surrounding countryside offers some excellent walking, especially for those who prefer lesser known and less crowded tracks.

From Makarora the road continues south past the shores of lakes Wanaka and Hawea to Wanaka township, the first place of any size since Fox Glacier. The superb scenery of the West Coast has now been exchanged for a landscape that is perhaps even more spectacular: like sapphires adorning an emerald crown, the Southern Lakes fringe the vast untouched forests of Fiordland.

Siberia Adventure Tour

A great way to get to know the area if you have limited time is the Siberia Experience. This adventure tour starts from Makarora and involves a 25 minute scenic flight to the remote Siberia Valley in Mount Aspiring National Park, a three hour bush walk (without a guide) and then a jet-boat ride back to Makarora. The Makarora Tourist Centre (03) 443 8372) offers the tour from mid-October to mid-April. People wishing to over-night in Makarora may choose between the motel or one of the simple DOC campsites to the north of town at Cameron Flat and Davis Flat.
